Non-Fiction Vanguard Award

This year SF DocFest is jazzed to honor Penny Lane with our Non-Fiction Vanguard Award.  Exuding a winning blend of intellectual curiosity and idiosyncratic humor that shapes her films, filmmaker Penny Lane has quickly become one of the trendsetters in the ongoing documentary renaissance that has taken place over the past decade.

SF DocFest prides itself in recognizing those unconventional, creative risk-taking filmmakers that are redefining the nonfiction cinematic form and are someone to watch.  Penny Lane is one of those filmmakers.  This award is a celebration of that attitude and her films which are often research-rich illuminations of obscure and entertaining subjects.  Her filmmaking is pushing boundaries and is redefining what people think documentary is.

Please join us Saturday, June 2nd, 5p at the Roxie for a screening of her newest found footage feature documentary, The Pain of Others (2018), and moderated discussion between Lane and film critic Michael Fox, followed by a hosted reception.

Other short works by Lane will screen during the festival, including a retrospective screening of her first film, We Are The Littletons (2004), the world premiere of Normal Appearances  (2018) and the West Coast premiere of a new short, Nellie Bly Makes the News (2018).
