About the Festival

Film fans know that the short films at any festival are the don’t-miss programs of the fest. SF IndieShorts’ themed programs will present a distillation of the very best of thousands of voices, styles, and stories from around the world and around The Bay.

The Festival will feature dozens of new short films, fun parties, a live-in-VR theater showcase, a live music showcase and the inaugural presentation of the new Philo T. Farnsworth Award For Innovative Filmmaking to documentary filmmaker Sam Green.

The Philo T. Farnsworth Award: Sam Green

The San Francisco Independent Shorts Festival is pleased to honor innovative documentary filmmaker Sam Green with the 2018 Philo T. Farnsworth Award. Named for the San Francisco based inventor of television, the award recognizes innovative excellence in filmmaking. Sam Green has made many movies including most recently A Thousand Thoughts, a live cinematic collaboration with the Kronos Quartet. Previous “live documentaries” include The Measure of All Things and The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller, featuring the indie rock band Yo La Tengo. Sam’s documentary The Weather Underground was nominated for an Academy Award and included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial.

Green will be presented with the award on the opening night of the festival and will be on hand for a screening of his latest Sundance exhibited short Julius Caesar was Buried in a Pet Cemetery along with a program of his earlier short films lot 63, grave c, Utopia, Part 3, Pie Fight ’69 (directed with Christian Bruno), N-Judah 5:30, The Universal Language and The Fabulous Stains: Behind the Movie (directed with Sarah Jacobson). Running through Green’s films is a celebration of idealism and the search for meaning along with the often humorous realities of human folly.
