SF IndieFest marks its 15th birthday with a Quinceañera! Like its party theme namesake, it’s a time to celebrate commitment to family, friends and community. Come fiesta with the best in independent films, parties, special events, guests, and our royal court: you!
Fittingly, this year’s lineup is rich with coming-of-age stories, starting with our Opening Night Film, the US Premiere of Michel Gondry’s (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind) new film THE WE AND THE I. Presented at the Brava Theater, it will be immediately followed by Quinceañera festivities with DJs, live music, an open bar and, of course, birthday cake!
And there’s more: FUNERAL KINGS, I DECLARE WAR, THE STORY OF LUKE, and the shorts program INNOCENCE BURSTING all focus on youth and life changes.
Fittingly, this year’s film program progresses through several decades: Visit the 1970s stylistically in BERBERIAN SOUND SYSTEM and ICEBERG SLIM: PORTRAIT OF A PIMP. Our House of Psychotic Women sidebar (celebrating a new film book by that name by Kier-la Janisse) includes archival presentations of 1972’sTOYS ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN and 1974’s BORN INNOCENT (the latter at a special Vortex Room presentation).
The festival moves into the 80s with two films that hark back to the glorious age of late night VHS: MANBORG and VIDEO DIARY OF A LOST GIRL. And this year’s annual Valentine’s Day sing-a-long party expands to two programs: the breakup-song bonanza, 80’s POWER BALLAD SING-A-LONG is now preceded by a pro-love SUPER SECRET SING-A-LONG show, a film from 1984 about a troubled musician and his attempts to hold on to his band and his lady love.
IndieFest alumnus Gregory Hatanaka (Mad Cowgirl, ’06) brings us into the 90s with BLUE DREAM, plus, the annual screening of THE BIG LEBOWSKI on 35mm as a midnight show at the Roxie, part of the 10th Annual Big Lebowski Party that kicks off right around the corner at 518 Valencia earlier that night.
The biggest event of the 00s is looked at from another angle in the World Premiere documentary FACELESS, while the porn industry’s meatgrinder is the subject of INSIDE LARA ROXX. IndieFest slides into the present day with two powerful films, THE REVISIONAIRIES, and the poetic Mexican film DAYS OF GRACE, this year’s Centerpiece Film.
Four films in the festival envision tomorrow, a tomorrow either comic (MANBORG, GHOSTS WITH SHIT JOBS, IT’S A DISASTER) or dire (ANTIVIRAL).
The Festival wraps up with the closing night film, Joe Swanberg’s ALL THE LIGHT IN THE SKY, which kicks off a whole weekend of Swanberg at the Roxie immediately following the festival.
New Experimental Short Works – from Local SF Legend Lynn Hershman and Newcomer Mary Helena Clark
Whether steeped in feminist history such as the works of local giant Lynn Hershman or poetic like the films of newcomer Mary Helena Clark the result of these experiments – to the viewer’s delight – is magical. Indiefest is honored to host these two incredible filmmakers who will present and screen their short films and discuss their intimate work while also contextualizing it within San Francisco’s long tradition of experimental filmmaking. Program on February 9.
Cults, Manholes & Slide Rail Riders: SF Bay Area Locals Debut Shorts
Viewers will discover the Bay Area’s up and coming directorial talents in the annual shorts extravaganza: laugh with hilarious mockumentary of one man’s dream SLIDE RAIL SUPERMAN by Donald Harrison, and with the spoof-trailer THE MUPPETLESS MOVIE by Vincent Gargiulo; reflect on the meaning of freedom with futuristic sci-fi LIFE INTERNAL by Peter Lindsey and on that of love with THE BEGINNING by Brian Tolle.

From the director of THE PEOPLE VS. GEORGE LUCAS, Alexandre Philippe brings THE LIFE AND TIMES OF PAUL THE PSYCHIC OCTOPUS, the story of Paul the Psychic Octopus, an octopus who made headlines with his 100% success rate at the 2010 World Cup; The McManus Brothers film, FUNERAL KINGS tells the story of two, young alter boys who get into trouble after playing hooky following a funeral service; Paul Bunnell’s 1950’s throwback, THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X, a surreal genre of sci-fi B movies complete with musical numbers, over-the-top dialogue, and hilarious special effects; The futuristic, sci-fi comedy, from the directing team of Chris McCawley, Jim Morrison, Jim Munroe, and Tate Young, GHOSTS WITH SHIT JOBS is a hilarious satire about a generation of Torontonians in 2040 who work dead-end jobs in the future.
¡Fiesta Quinceañera!
Is it a film festival with parties, or a party with film screenings?
It’s hard to say. As evidence, even before the film festival begins, SF IndieFest kicks off the month of February with their now-annual Super Bowl: Men in Tights event at the Roxie Theater on February 3. Watch the game on the big Roxie screen with local comedian/skit comedy “sports commentators” and a couple hundred of your closest sports fans.
The festival then officially starts Thursday, February 7, with a fun opening night film followed by an equally fun after party, and the events don’t stop until February 21.
The 10th annual Big Lebowski Party will be held Saturday, February 9, and will feature costumes, interactive games, and White Russians followed by a midnight screening of the Coen Brothers’ classic film at The Roxie
The festival presents its annual Roller Disco Costume Party at the Women’s Building Auditorium, 3543 18th St at Valencia on Friday, February 15 at 8.00p. Skates Rentals and Groovy Disco Tunes provided by Black Rock Roller Disco. Disco Attire Encouraged! 21up. $10, or free with any IndieFest ticket stub.
Additionally, SF IndieFest introduces two Valentines Day Sing-A-Longs; On St. Valentines Day, February 14, the festival presents at 7.15p a Super Secret Sing-A-Long show (pro-Valentines Day); 9.30p is the 80s Power Ballad ‘anti-Valentines Day’ Sing-A-Long, both at The Roxie. Spandex, make up, teased hair, 80s hair metal never looked and sounded more fabulous.
February 8, 9, 15, 16 will also feature film festival after parties at Mission B.A.G. (Bad Art Gallery) at 518 Valencia Gallery. The events feature fabulous art curated from only the finest thrift stores, flea markets and yard sales, plus game shows, DJ nights and special film screenings. All parties start at 7.00p and last till midnight.
Opening Night Film
The festival will kick off February 7th at the Brava Theater in San Francisco. Join us for a special screening of Michel Gondry’s latest feature film THE WE AND THE I. Immediately following the screening, join SF IndieFest as they celebrate their Quinceañera with live music featuring DJ Haute Mess (Brass Taxx), an open bar and birthday cake.
Centerpiece Film
Everado Gout’s DIAS DE GRACIA, an epic crime drama set in Mexico City against the backdrop of three televised Soccer World Cups. After premiering at a midnight screening during the Cannes Film Festival, the film has garnered considerable praise from the international film community.
Closing Night Film
IndieFest will come to a close this year with a special screening of Joe Swanberg’s latest directorial effort, ALL THE LIGHT IN THE SKY. Jane Adams stars as a woman living in a house perched on stilts above a beach in Malibu.

Regular film tickets are $10 in advance; $12 at the door. Mission BAG events are free. Super Bowl, Roller Disco and Big Lebowski parties are $10. Festival passes are $170 for a full pass; $25 for under 21; $90 for a 10-Film Pack; $50 for a 5-Film Pack.
